Indian-AI Researcher Devendra Chaplot Joins Elon Musk’s xAI and SpaceX

Indian-origin artificial intelligence researcher Devendra Singh Chaplot has joined Elon Musk’s companies xAI and SpaceX, marking another significant step in Musk’s growing ambitions in the field of artificial intelligence.
Chaplot shared the news on the social media platform X, where he expressed excitement about working closely with Elon Musk and the teams at both companies to build advanced AI systems and potentially move toward superintelligence.
Combining Hardware and AI
According to Chaplot, the collaboration between SpaceX and xAI represents a unique opportunity to combine physical intelligence (hardware) with digital intelligence (AI models). He described the work environment as one with strong leadership, ambitious goals, and access to large-scale resources needed to build groundbreaking technology.
Elon Musk also welcomed Chaplot by reposting his message on X.
Strong Background in AI and Robotics
Before joining Musk’s companies, Chaplot had an impressive career in AI research and development. He was part of the founding team at Mistral AI, where he contributed to the development of advanced AI models such as Mistral 7B and Mixtral.
He also worked at Thinking Machines Lab, which focuses on building large-scale infrastructure for training foundation AI models.
Education and Research Work
Devendra Chaplot completed his undergraduate studies at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and later earned a PhD in machine learning from Carnegie Mellon University.
His research mainly focuses on:
- Reinforcement Learning
- Robotics and Embodied AI
- Navigation in complex environments
Earlier in his career, Chaplot also worked at Facebook AI Research, where he contributed to projects related to machine learning, robotics, and computer vision.
Future Plans
Chaplot said he plans to continue working on areas he has been passionate about for years, including robotics and the development of powerful AI systems.
His move to SpaceX and xAI is expected to strengthen Musk’s efforts to build advanced AI technologies that could transform both digital intelligence and real-world robotics.
